Below are some photos taken last May 10 during the training of altar servers in the Extraodinary Form of the Roman rite or the Traditional Latin Mass. Several observers were present to assist and support the trainees. The training lasted for 3 hours covering the topics: Vestments, Sacristy and Sanctuary of the Traditional Roman Rite. The servers and young men came from different parts of Metro Manila and neighboring dioceses. Bro. Mark Robinson Bunag, a seminarian of the Diocese of Kalookan, facilitated the training workshop at the Divine Mercy Parish in Sikatuna Village where traditional Latin mass is celebrated everyday since September 2007. The servers were then guided into their individual roles during the later half of the session.

Traditional Requiem Mass at PLDM
Story by: Mark Robinson Bunag
Photos by: Randyhl Janiola
On May 8, 2008, Fr. Froilan Rivera celebrated the Requiem Mass of 4th Class (R.M., n. 423) are other “daily” Masses of the dead that may be celebrated – instead of the Mass of the office of the day – on ferias of 4th class. The formulary used is the Missa Quotidiana. In requiem Masses of 4th class (the “daily Mass of the dead”) if the Mass is celebrated for a definite person or persons the appropriate prayer from the Orationes Diversæ is said and the prayer Fidelium is used.
The Mass is for all the faithful departed and for an undetermined group (especially the most abandoned souls in purgatory), the prayers are said, without change of order or text, as they are found in the daily Mass formulary. The requiem Mass was attended by many faithful who have devotion to the Holy Souls.
A requiem Mass is a Mass, outside the order of the liturgy of the day, celebrated, according to a special rite, for the dead. A Mass for the dead in a wider term, as Masses which are not requiem are often celebrated for the dead according to the wish of the celebrant who makes an offering for the celebration. (cf. Rubricæ Missalis Romani, no. 32).

CBCP News: Archbishop Dosado urges faithful: 'Defend Church’s doctrines'
Congratulations to Archbishop Dosado and the Catholic Faith Defenders!

OZAMIS CITY, May 10, 2008―The Roman Catholic Archbishop of Ozamis, Archbishop Jesus A. Dosado, C.M., called on the faithful to “defend Catholic church doctrines” as he urged for a rebirth of apologetics, “the first subject we used to study when we began our Theology in the seminary.”
The prelate said the time is “ripe for a revival of the defense of our religion by reason illuminated by faith.” He said apologetics should be centered on the living testimony of believers rather than the traditional philosophical and historical reason, “not on the traditional question of ‘how we get to God’ but God comes to us.”
He explained that apologetics of personal testimony is particularly suited to the nature of Catholicism and traditional arguments are still necessary.
“There’s a need to study the scriptures, the Catechism, the History of the Church and especially the teachings of the magisterium,” the prelate said.
In a separate interview Friday afternoon, Bro. Reynaldo Rosal, Catholic Faith Defenders’ (CFD) chairman for religious programs, said the government’s Securities and Exchange Commission noted a significant growth in Christian fundamentalist groups from 228 before 1980 to 1,448 from 1980 to 1989.
CFD National Treasurer Adam Amper said “Our Catholic faith is a way of life which we are supposed to live with and we are called to defend.”
He added the Acts and Decrees of the Second Plenary Council of the Philippines recognize Apologetics as an important part of the pastoral and theological tradition of the Catholic Church.
Dosado, in his letter to the Catholic Faith Defenders, has recognized its role in helping propagate the Gospel as it is mandated to “study Catholic doctrines, dogmas, precepts and traditions of the Church; to uphold and defend, in writing and in speech the Catholic faith from attacks and denunciations whether from within or from without.”
Catholic Faith Defenders of Ozamis City leads in the evangelization programs over Catholic-run DxDD AM – Radyo Kampana.
The Catholic Faith Defenders – Ozamis chapter will renew their oath before Archbishop Dosado at a 5 a.m Mass on Pentecost Sunday. (Wendell Talibong)

Bicol Tridentine Mass Update: Siervas de Jesus Convent Iriga City
Story by: Dr. Herbert Rosana
I was privilege to be invited on May 4, 2008 to assist in the TLM celebrated by Fr. Abe, CRS in connection with the retreat he conducted with the nuns and novices of the Siervas de Jesus Convent in Iriga City, Camarines Sur, Philippines.
Iriga is a City in the Center of the Bicol Peninsula. Fr. Abe wanted to provide the sisters a window to the ancient Liturgy of the Latin Rite. It seems now that through this apostolate, the TLM is being propagated little by little in the Bicol Peninsula where the Traditional Forms of the Liturgy has vanished since the post conciliar reform of the Liturgy.
We were delighted to have the Superior of the House sing, who herself is a musician and singer. So we had a schola for the first time since the TLM was celebrated last February 2008 in Sorsogon City. This was our first Missa Cantata.
Indeed it was edifying to observe how the sisters sang and responded to the dialogues of the Mass. It was also their first time to observe the silent recitation of the Canon of the Mass. Indeed what a fitting spiritual treat to retreatants to savour the beauty of this ancient liturgy celebrated by saints of old and until now continues to edify the faithful.
Even if bereft of vestments and other minor vessels, the Mass in its ancient form can be celebrated in the most dignified way. And it never fails to exude it spiritual beauty and radiance. A delight to the souls of them that trusts in the Lord, who listens to His Word and accept the gift of salvation.
What shall I give to the Lord for all the things He has done unto me? I will take the cup of salvation and praise the name of the Lord!

Sorsogon, Bicol Tridentine Mass Update
Story By: Dr. Herbert Rosana
On the fifth Sunday after Easter, Fr. Abe, CRS celebrated the Mass in the Extraordinary Form. A group of lay faithful assisted in the Mass. I was privileged to be present to assist in this Mass. The inclement weather outside brought heavy down pours, but despite of that Fr. Abe and the rest of us were able to fulfill our Sunday obligations. Fr. Abe had just concluded a weeklong retreat with the Somascan Sisters plus the series of activities in the convent and in the school. They were also preparing for the 'despedida" for priests and religious who will be leaving for new assignments.
Fr. Richard Germanetto, CRS, his superior was transferred to their Seminary in Tagaytay. Fr. Richard was the one who gave encouragement to Fr. Abe to say this Mass. In fact before leaving for his new assignment, Fr. Richard bequeted to Fr. Abe a copy of the Liber Usualis.
Due to stress brought about by the demands of the work, it was inevitable that Fr. Abe sufferred from his sinusitis, but he said that the thought that he would be celebrating the Traditional Latin Mass strengthened him and by a miracle this Sunday he was already feeling well.
He was able to say the Mass for all of us. I observe that as time goes on things are getting better with our celebrations. Hopefully by June we shall be able to have the Missa Cantata.
