Van De Steen Chorale

By: Marilou Barnes-Cortez

The Van De Steen Chorale, who were featured during the televised Christmas midnight TLM, are alumni members of the Manila Cathedral Boy's choir who sang and chanted for the TLM at the cathedral forty years ago. The Manila Cathedral Boy's Choir was founded by the late Rufino Cardinal Santos and trained under Father John Van De Steen, CICM, a Belgian missionary. Now in their late 50's, their cherished dream to sing as a group Sacred Music and the Gregorian Chants was fulfilled when they were invited to sing as a choir for the inaugural Traditional Latin Mass at St. Jerome Emiliani and Sta. Susanna Parish last June 29, 2008.

So when will the Van De Steen Chorale sing again in the Manila Cathedral? Or better still, will the TLM be ever celebrated again in the Manila Cathedral?

Having the TLM at the Manila Cathedral is just a dream, for now. But miracles do happen! God willing, one of these days, Bishop Gregorio will celebrate a Solemn Pontifical Mass at the Manila Cathedral.

Yes, it is still a dream but miracles do happen: a Solemn Pontifical High Mass at the Throne.

I have a follow up question so please bear with me. Is our own bishop Gaudencio B. Cardinal Rosales Archbishop of Manila open, hostile or indifferent to the celebration on TLM in Manila Cathedral? He was ordained before the Vatican II so I believed our own bishop is still familiar with the TLM. Deo Gratias.

Hi! I am told you'll be singing for the (TLM) Wedding Mass of my good friend (& student) Rosita 'Ochie' Bumanglag! Thanks (in advance) & looking forward to meeting (hearing) you on March 19th!

Dear Sir,

I am the Coordinator of the Tridentine Liturgy Community in Hong Kong, and I heard that the Van de Steen Chorale is coming to Macau and Hong Kong. May I ask if anyone knows of the contact of the person in charge of the Chorale? I would greatly appreciate it as I wish to offer my help to maximise the opportunity of their stay in Hong Kong and Macau.

Thanks.
